Outreach & Community Programs

CBFS is excited to expand its science based, experiential education programs into local classrooms and other spaces. Let Field Station educators invite students to discover the natural world with programs that include activities, biofacts, and live animal encounters. All programs are scientific in nature with strong ties to literacy and math. CBFS can tailor outreach programs to all age groups. Outreach programs are typically around an hour and a half in length and can accommodate 30 students per educator. CBFS is currently offering:
  • Lecture Series
  • Critter meet and greets
  • Literacy programs
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Bioblitzs

CBFS 2025 Bioblitz!

CBFS is very excited to host our first ever Bioblitz on September 20, 2025! This day program will provide the opportunity for you to learn more about the importance of biodiversity, how to identify and distinguish species, and the chance to apply this knowledge to our local coastal ecosystems in a friendly competition!

A Bioblitz is a rapid biodiversity study within a designated area; essentially, you identify as many species in an area before time runs out! For the purpose of this project, we will focus on three unique habitats on the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (Assateague Island). To record our observations, we will be utilizing an online application called iNaturalist; 'iNat' is a platform where people upload their observations and people can collaborate to identify what species was observed. Many scientists use the data collected on iNat for their research and studies, so it is an incredible opportunity to contribute to community science!

We are very excited to offer this program free of charge to the public! All we ask is that you provide your own packed lunch for the program and transportation to and from the Chincoteague Bay Field Station. We will meet at CBFS at 8:30 AM on September 20 and begin the day with a brief lesson on biodiversity, iNat, and species identification. We will then transport participants to the Refuge, index our three habitats, eat lunch, and transport all participants back to CBFS by 3:30 PM. If you are interested in participating, please complete the registration form below. If you would like to learn more, click the "Learn More - Bioblitz" button below.
