Course Description:
Creative Placemaking is an initiative meant to encourage towns and cities to create a sense of community by integrating the arts through creative and unique experiences. In this class, students will consider how best to use their skills as communicators to bring together a small town in need of a more contemporary view of their community, the quaint island of Chincoteague, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. In this class, students will be working together to create a campaign that will celebrate the unique personalities of the Chincoteague Community, and by doing so, build a visual identity and marketing campaign that will both define them and unite them. Students from a variety of disciplines are encouraged to take this class, including photography, videography, writing, marketing, public relations, and illustration, as well as interactive and graphic designers. The class will be blended, with a portion of the class being offered online, and the remainder taught in person at the Chincoteague Bay Field Station.
