Students will learn about how barrier islands & dunes form, ecological succession, sediment deposition, and distribution of flora and fauna. The head out to pristine Wallops Island home to NASA’s flight facility.

Plunge into the saltmarsh and discover what plants and animals call this productive ecosystem home. After investigating the saltmarsh, take the opportunity to  do a “productivity plunge” in the mud pit.

Oceanography Research Cruise 

Climb aboard our research vessels to hone your oceanographic skills by testing water quality, gathering marine data, & using a trawl net to collect organisms. Must be at least 9yo. Max is 23 people before adding a 2nd boat.

Micro & Macro Organism Lab

Get up close and personal with organisms of the Chincoteague Bay. Using field guides, dichotomous keys, & microscopes students examine and identify fish, invertebrates, zooplankton and phytoplankton.

Hike into the woods for a look at what makes up a forest! Investigate the maritime forest from top to bottom, identifying trees, animal inhabitants, & their survive tactics in this extreme environment.

​Ornithology

Students will discuss how to identify birds by body shape, coloration, beak shape and habitat.  Students will visit a variety of ecosystems with binoculars in hand to see how many birds they can identify.

Kayaking

Students will have the opportunity to learn kayak skills and paddle their way through salt marshes, Cypress Swamps and local tidal creeks. Must be at least 10yo. Max is 14 paddlers at a time.

Test your night vision during this dark hike.  Students will acquaint themselves with nocturnal animals and the adaptations that make them successful as creatures of the night.

Marine Invertebrates

Dig deeper into the wild and wacky world of invertebrates.  Students will get to use a variety of sampling methods to be able to collect as many different organisms as they can. Using micro and macroscopes students will examine a wide variety of local marine invertebrates.  ​
