Dr. Thomas Klinger |
Biography
Thomas Scott Klinger received his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of South Florida in 1984. Before joining the faculty at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania in 1985, Dr. Klinger taught at St. Leo College, which draws students from throughout the Caribbean. Teaching and research activities have led to visiting appointments in Greece, Australia, Antarctica, Taiwan, and Central America. Dr. Klinger’s area of expertise is the relationships between nutrition, growth, and reproduction of sea animals, particularly starfish, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers. These sea animals often act as keystone species, and have developed into important fishery and aquaculture species. Recent work has focused on the effects of rising sea surface temperatures upon the functional well-being of these sea animals.
As Vice President for Academics of the Marine Science Consortium, Wallops Island, Virginia (1989 to 2004), Dr. Klinger promoted expanding research activities, oversaw college-level courses, coordinated educational field trips, and developed robust programs for both youth and older learners. Current efforts as Graduate Coordinator focus on expanding graduate offerings in biology and environmental science at Bloomsburg University and expanding opportunities for interdisciplinary and international research.
