Course Description:
This course will examine literatures focused on nature and the environment from authors of various backgrounds and in a range of time periods. We will look for common themes and techniques and discuss what the literature reveals about the human relationship with the environment. The class will be conducted in a combination of lecture and discussion with formal and informal writing assignments. Some of the writing will consist of personal responses to the natural environment surrounding the Chincoteague Bay Field Station.

- Students will describe a range of literary/cinematic strategies used in literature about the environment, and they will compare the effects of these differing strategies.
- Students will identify relations among ideas, text, structure or other text features to evaluate how they support understanding of the text as a whole.
- Students will establish connections between literary/cinematic texts and broader social concerns about the environment.
- Students will write coherent, polished interpretive essays about course texts.
