This is a 1-credit supplemental skills course open to all students at the CBFS during Session I. Meeting times will be scheduled in consultation with the other professors teaching during Session I so that students can enroll in this course in addition to their principle course.
Course Description:
Topics include the following:
An introduction to foundational topics within marine biology, including (1) quantitative reasoning for aquatic biologists, (2) marine geography and mapping, (3) life in a fluid environment, (4) microcosms: marine aquarium systems, (5) scientific illustration, (6) electronic resources in marine biology, (7) internships, coops, jobs, and careers in marine biology, and (8) current topics.

Ability to set up and maintain aquaria
Ability to locate and interpret electronic marine resources
Ability to create useful scientific illustrations
General Description of Field Activities
This is a skills-based course that will typically meet in the evenings and on weekends, around the schedules of the other courses offered during Summer Session 1. Field excursions will be chosen by the students, subject to availability.

30%
Required Textbook or Supplies:
Ruler, calculator, flash drive / memory stick, pencils, pens, colored pencils, plain white paper, lined note-taking paper. Laptop computer optional.

Prerequisites:
Placement in college-level mathematics or permission of instructor.
