VOLUNTEERING AT THE CHINCOTEAGUE BAY FIELD STATION

Chincoteague Bay Field Station is now accepting volunteers!
​We welcome members of our community to join us in the tasks that make our programs great. 

CBFS provides training specific to each task asked of our volunteers. 
Our volunteers are an important part of our organization and to show our appreciation receive 10% off their total gift store purchase(s)!
​All CBFS volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. 

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
​

Adult & Family Education Volunteer

If you have experience and enjoy kayaking, biking, and/or grilling we have the perfect place for you! Join our Adult & Family department as they guide adult learners in the ecology and natural history of the Eastern Shore. We are in need of support staff for these programs to assist as kayaking/biking guides, transport vehicles, and help prep/cook meals while in the field. Enjoy program activities alongside our participants and help our guests get the most out of their time on the shore!
Summer Camp Education Volunteer

Work alongside our educators and counselors to ensure a safe and fun summer camp experience for campers ages 5-18. Example duties include: assisting with check in/out, co-leading activities, help facilitate meal times. 

Water Quality Data Collection 

We are currently seeking 1 candidate to join our water quality data collection team. On the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, this 2 person team visits two creeks near Saxis, VA to take water quality samples. Data is recorded for CBFS records, samples are sent to the VA Aquarium Water Analysis Lab, and all collected data is reported to the DEQ. This project is funded the the Virginia DEQ Citizen Water Monitoring Grant. Candidates for the position must be steady on their feet in a variety on different terrain (including in the water) and be able to tolerate various weather and insect conditions. 
Beach Cleanup & Community Action Days

​CBFS hosts seasonal beach cleanups at Wallops and Assateague Island. Come help us keep our beaches beautiful! CBFS also hosts seasonal Community Action Days at our Living Shoreline Site in Greenbackville, VA. Join us as we remove invasive plants, monitor oyster castles & water quality, plant native Spartina, and more! 
Community Events Education Volunteer

CBFS participates in 10+ community events throughout the year. These events raise awareness for local environmental issues, bond together our local stakeholders, and help us create stewards to protect the beauty of the Eastern Shore. We welcome volunteers with knowledge on local marine species, ecology, and natural history to assist in tabling at these events!
Administrative Assistant

We have up to 150 participants in 3+ different programs here at the field station during our busy season. ​During morning and afternoon free periods this position would help our registrar with tasks such as gift store checkout and other guest services. 
Database Entry

Input data on water quality, organism collection, and field site usage for our programs. This position is ideal for someone with database entry experience and excel knowledge. Scientific data analysis a plus but not required. 
Special Events

During special events like our open houses, farm to table dinners, or community events we are in need of support staff for tasks such as: parking, ticketing, guest services, and set-up and break down staff. Volunteers at these events are welcome to attend and participate in event activities while not on duty.
